Decisions We Live With

What History Reveals About Leadership Under Pressure

Most leadership failures do not announce themselves.

They arrive through decisions that seem reasonable at the time, made by capable people who believe they are doing the right thing.

Decisions We Live With sets twenty moments from history, from the beaches of Gallipoli and the walls of Malta to the retreat from Moscow and the night before Challenger flew, alongside the pressures leaders face in organisations today. Each chapter explores a different test of judgement: inherited certainty, silence mistaken for agreement, courage without clarity, incentives that undo stated values, and decisions that were right and still left damage behind.

Now that a machine can produce a confident answer to almost any question in seconds, the ability to weigh evidence, hear dissent and own the consequences matters more than ever. This is a book about that ability.
