Commercial thinking, built from actually running the function.
Rev-IQ exists because most software businesses solve product problems well and commercial problems badly — not from a lack of intelligence, but from a lack of structure.
A technology CEO, not a consultant who's never run the function.
Rev-IQ was founded by Joel Smith, a technology CEO with more than two decades of experience leading software and SaaS businesses across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Having led growth, transformation, acquisitions and AI initiatives from inside executive teams — most recently as Group CEO of a group of MedTech software businesses operating across Australia and New Zealand — he created Rev-IQ to help founders and leadership teams build stronger, more valuable software businesses.
The frameworks published here aren't theoretical. They're the operating patterns that held up under real board, investor and customer pressure — refined across multiple businesses, not written from the outside looking in.
“Joel makes intelligent, well-informed, but quick decisions — one of the few leaders who truly has a vision and takes action based on it.”
Allen Boening — Co-Founder, Synsona
“Joel has unique expertise in sales management and leadership. His hands-on approach and ability to generate results won him the respect of the wider business.”
Jason Baxendine — Director, Datadog
What Rev-IQ is
Rev-IQ is a resource hub and advisory practice focused on growth, retention and commercial operating performance for SaaS, software, technology and AI-built businesses.
The frameworks, worksheets and advisory pathways here are built on hands-on experience leading commercial functions — sales, marketing, customer success, and revenue operations — inside SaaS and enterprise software businesses operating across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, including at CRO and Group CEO level.
That experience shows up as practical structure, not theory: operating rhythms that actually get used, pricing models that survive contact with a sales team, and onboarding plans that don't depend on one specific person being in the room.
How Rev-IQ works
Four principles run through everything published or delivered here.
-
01
Useful before it's promotional
Every resource has to stand on its own — usable without ever talking to Rev-IQ directly.
-
02
Structure over spectacle
The emphasis stays on frameworks and grounded operating experience — the judgement behind Rev-IQ is transparent, but the site isn't built around a personal following.
-
03
Diagnosis before intervention
Advisory and fractional work always starts by identifying where the constraint actually is — not by proposing a standard package.
-
04
Built for operators, by an operator
Every framework has been tested against the reality of running a commercial function, not just written about it.
